Peru has the 106th highest fertility rate in the world. Approximately 2.37 children are born per woman in the country. The male gender of children seems to be the predominant sex at birth there are 1.05 males per female born each year.

The fertility rate for Peru has declined dramatically since the 1970s. Many government bureaus expect this trend to continue for the next several years. Just 10 years ago, the fertility rate among Peruvian women was 3.3 children on average.

Of the children born yearly, Peruvian mothers experienced 28 deaths for every 1000 live births. This gives Peru the 78th highest infant mortality rate in the world. Most of those infants who die shortly after birth our mail as compared to female babies. The positive side of this situation is that Peru has drastically improved their infant mortality rate. For example in the mid-1900s the Peruvian people saw 130 deaths per 1000 live births. Despite the progress experienced by Peru, the country still lags behind most of its other Latin American neighbors.

One contribution to a lower mortality rate in live births is the fact that calorie consumption is among the population has often dropped. Most studies correlate calorie consumption with income levels. Therefore, the majority of people that experience problems at birth are the lower-level income people.
