HIV/AIDS Information
There are currently about 76,000 people in Peru that have the HIV virus. This puts the country as the 53rd most infected country in the world. Each year, Peru loses about 3300 people to AIDS.

In 2002 a population-based survey conducted in Peru's 24 largest cities revealed that HIV prevalence was estimated to be less than 1% of the population. Broken down, 0.6% of pregnant women had the virus, 0.4% of all males have AIDS, and 0.1% of all females are infected with HIV. Those ages most prevalently hit by the virus are those of 25 through 34.

Peru currently receives funding from USAID to help combat HIV/AIDS in the country. In 2007, the country received $1.2 million for HIV/AIDS programs and services.

HIV transmission is most common in Peru's largest urban cities. Outside of these populated areas, HIV infection is much lower. Of all reported cases in Peru, 72.2% are listed in Lima and Callao. 97% of all cases of AIDS in Peru are transmitted sexually. 2% of cases are a result of mother to child transmission. The last 1% occurs through contaminated blood and blood products.
